LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

I feel so very grateful to live and work here in Toronto (Tkaronto). I want to acknowledge with respect and gratitude that I am an uninvited settler on this land:  the territory of the Anishinaabe, Mississauga and Haudenosaunee peoples. As a settler, I also recognize that land acknowledgments alone are insufficient. I am dedicated to following the calls for action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to continuing to learn more about this land and its original inhabitants and to work towards reparations. LINEAGE

While my teaching has changed over the years to encompass a number of influences, I owe a vast deal of my learning and practice to the traditions of Yoga and Buddhism. Yoga originated in India at least 1500 years ago as a spiritual tradition that encompassed not only the practices of physical postures (asana) and breath (pranayama), but also a wide array of spiritual techniques including ethical guidelines and meditative practices.

Mindfulness based practices as they have been popularized in the West were originally derived from the Southeast Asian tradition of Buddhism, which is also over 1,500 years old. I have benefitted tremendously from these practices as well. I endeavour to honour and give back to these traditions within my own life and teaching through a variety of means that are personal to me.

Lastly, I am also deeply grateful to the many teachers and guides- academic, in wellness + movement circles, psychotherapeutic, ancestral and in my personal life- who have supported my learning and made it possible for me to teach and practice as I do. My life and work are enriched by their generosity and sharing.
